The rich and varied terrain of California, where Wayne Thiebaud has lived and worked for nearly all of his one hundred years, has inspired several series of landscapes over the artist’s long and prolific career—including fantastical cityscapes, luminous riverscapes of the Sacramento delta, towering mountains, and vivid beach scenes.

Thiebaud began his series of cityscapes in the early 1970s, when he took a hillside studio in San Francisco. This work on paper, titled City Views from 2013, is a color lithograph hand worked in pastel by the artist. Inspired by the city’s steep hills and vertiginous streets, here Thiebaud captures the dizzying feel of bustling San Francisco, which he has called a “fantasy city,” through exaggerated perspectives, dramatically cast shadows, and extreme foreshortening.
